Susan Fanfa’s design philosophy centers on the authentic beauty of simple materials and the elegance of geometric forms. Her journey began with fashion design, evolving into a passion for furniture after an internship with a San Francisco sculptor, where she acquired hands-on experience in metal fabrication and finishing techniques.
In Los Angeles, Susan honed her skills working with a renowned interior designer and furniture manufacturer, and later at a custom cabinet shop crafting pieces for leading designers and architects across the US. This firsthand experience, spanning over 25 years, instilled in her an unwavering attention to detail, a deep respect for quality craftsmanship, and fostered enduring collaborations with top Los Angeles fabricators.
The SUSAN FANFA DESIGN collection, celebrated for its refined aesthetic, premiered at the Chicago Furniture Fair in 1998. Susan’s design process is uniquely organic. "I capture the initial idea, then head straight to the shop. I need to interact with the materials to understand their forms and connections. It's a collaboration with my fabricators, a process of discovery where the pieces evolve. Being present, immersed in the materials, allows me to discern what resonates, what falls short, and what feels right. The final design is rarely the same as my initial sketch."
